The Drone People feat. Stephen O’Malley, Mika Vainio & others

Info : Live Performances · Paradiso - Main Hall · thu. 21-02-08

Inspired by drone gods such as LaMonte Young and Tony Conrad, iDEAL record-label boss Joachim Nordwall has curated an event that will celebrate time, tradition, the future and the past, while simultaneously challenging them all. The sound collective The Drone People, formed especially for this event, will present a preview of their project 24 Hour Drone People. The entire piece will be performed just after Sonic Acts at the Stockholm New Music Festival.

The Drone People will perform a 4-hour concert, consisting of a series of solo performances. The Drone People are:

Joachim Nordwall (SE) is the curator of The Drone People. He is running iDEAL (a record label, festival and event organizer) in Gothenburg, Sweden since 1998. He is a member of the ritual rock/drone group The Skull Defekts since 2005, filth noise/metal group Satan Power (with John Olson, Lasse Marhaug and Edwin Pouncey) and analogue drone duo Alvars Orkester since 1988, composing something so called Psychic Broadcasting. Nordwall is also active composing solo works and collaborating with artists like Leif Elggren, Mark Wastell, BJNilsen and Mats Gustafsson. His work contains a static intensity.

Mika Vainio (FI), currently based in Berlin, is one half of the awesome minimal electronic duo Pan Sonic from Finland, (the other half is Ilpo Vaisanen). Whereas Pan Sonic has roots in the early 90’s rave scene, Vainio personally also has a background as a drummer and as a part of the early Finnish industrial and noise scene. His solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analogue warmth and electronic harshness – be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno. Vainio has a rare ability to create unknown soundworlds.

Hildur Gudnadöttir (IS), a classically trained cellist and multi instrumentalist. Her contributions to drones are sensitive, yet harsh and intense. She is part of the Icelandic contemporary music scene and has collaborated and played with such varied range of artists as Skúli Sverrisson, Johann Johannsson, Schneider ™, Stilluppsteypa and even Throbbing Gristle. Gudnadöttir also is a member of the dirty Balkan and Bulgarian folk music band Nix Noltes. She has written music for film, dance and theatre.

C. Spencer Yeh (USA), also known as Burning Star Core, was born in Taiwan and operates from his base in Cincinatti, Ohio. Cascades of releases, one rougher than the other, have been unleashed for over a decade. His music has been drifting more and more from filth noise towards a minimal drone noise type of thing based on voice and violin, giving thoughts to LaMonte Young and Tony Conrad, who he recently collaborated with. C. Spencer Yeh is constantly touring and is today no doubt one of the main characters of the US experimental music scene. He has collaborated with musicians like John Wiese, Yellow Swans, Aaron Dilloway, John Olson and Comets on Fire.

Carl Michael von Hausswolff (SE), is a composer and one of the leading figures in the field of radical sound performance. His works are pure, intuitive studies of electricity, frequency functions and tonal autism. In his concerts a very physical, almost brutal, side of his aesthetics blends with a polyfrequential beauty. The audience often falls into a form of trance, other times people have thanked him ‘for the massage’ or have expressed a ‘feeling that the flesh came off the bones’ due to the vibrations of the low frequencies used. CM von Hausswolff is also a well-known curator of art events. In the 80’s he was part of the ground breaking society and record label Radium 226.5 in Gothenburg, Sweden and a member of the group PHAUSS. Moreover he is one of two monarchs of Elgaland-Vargaland (the other is king Leif Elggren), which consist of all areas of no-man’s land, territories between national boundaries on both land and sea, digital and mental spaces. Since 2007, they also rule the kingdom of the dead. Elgaland-Vargaland has its own national anthem, flag, coat of arms, currency, citizens and ministers. CM von Hausswolff is master of the EVP phenomena and the work of Friedrich Jürgenson, a man who recorded the voices of the dead, at first by mistake. Hausswolff’s work is static, electric and often built upon frequencies.

Currently based in Paris, guitarist, graphic designer and sound manipulator Stephen O’Malley (USA) is spreading a gospel containing drone and doom. As a member of extreme doom metal band Sunn O))) he is part of the genres resurrection and the scene’s growth into the galleries through collaborations with New York artist Banks Violette. O’Malley is possessing a strength and a certain deep and dark touch to the drone that few master. O’Malley has background in the US underground black- and deathmetal scene as a member of bands like Khanate, Burning Witch and Thorr’s Hammer. He is currently recording solo material, apart from touring with KTL (with Peter Rehberg) and Sunn O))). This year, the iDEAL label will release O’Malley’s solo cd Salt.

BJ Nilsen (SE) has a background in the Swedish dark ambient and industrial noise scene as Morthound on the infamous Cold Meat Industry label. Going from that he went to Hazard where he did deep listening & minimal ambient, often based on field recordings, for London’s Ash International and Touch labels. Nowadays, Nilsen is recording and performing under his own name and his drone is concentrated, focused and beautifully disturbing. As part of Touch’s Spire project, Nilsen is seen with Fennesz, Philip Jeck and others performing material based upon organ sound and he is collaborating with ex-Cabaret Voltaire member Chris Watson on field recording projects. He is also working with Icelandic techno absurdists Stiluppsteypa and Us percussion magician Z’ev. Nilsen is also member of industrial dub duo Death Dub.
