Project of John Burton (UK), who finds a unique balance between fold, experimentation and electronica in his oeuvre, a perfect example being his CD The Forest and the Sea (2006). The Wire wrote: “”If there is such a genre [folktronica], he is the best possible exponent”.

Little Leafcutter John Biography
Since my first album release on Planet-Mu Records in 2000 my music has grown and nurtured by experience has become richer and more diverse. 2006 saw the release of my 4th studio album “The Forest and The Sea” which was released on the Berlin based label Staubgold. The album centers on the story of two people lost in the forest and pulls together my love of guitar and voice based writing with more experimental electronic sonic forms. My goal was not to fuse the two styles but to have them co-exist in a meaningful way without diminishing the power of either one.
Since the records release I have had the pleasure of touring with my band (Alice Grant & Leo Chadburn) through the UK, Germany, Poland, Holland, France, etc… The show is unlike any other with the electronically treated slinky (metallic spring toy) being a big hit with the audience. There are often long passages of conversation between the band and Audience and improvised songs are born based upon the audience’s suggestions.
Playing live is very important to the development of my music so I try to play with as many interesting people as possible. In the last few years I have worked with all kinds of people: David Toop, Sebastian Rochford, Sebastien Roux, Kaffe Matthews, Janek Schaefer, Tomoko Takahashi, and Ingrid Laubrock.
I have played many concerts from intimate house parties to the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall for the 2007 Meltdown festival and shared various stages with the likes of: Matmos, Nick Cave, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Jarvis Cocker, Yo La Tengo, Grace Jones, Beth Orton, Otomo Yoshihide, Aki Onda, Phillip Jeck, Carsten Nicolai, Tujiko Noriko amongst others.
Some Factoids:
I’m a member of the Mercury Music Prize Nominated contemporary jazz band ‘Polar Bear’. We have just finished recording an album of material for release in late ’07 on V2 records.
In June ’07 my first solo ‘art’ show opened at Beconsfield where I turned their Victorian wooden floor into a giant interactive instrument, In a previous project at the Serpentine Gallery I was invited by artist Tomoko Takahashi (short-listed for the 2000 Turner prize) to produce a live show based on Tomoko’s solo exhibition.
I write music software which I make available from my website – the last one ‘Forester’ was a surprise hit picking up support from eminently name droppable people. By June 2007 it had clocked up over 10,000 downloads.
My third album The Housebound Spirit (Planet-Mu, 2003) won an Honorary Mention at the 2004 Ars Electronica Awards and was featured on The Wire Magazine’s top 50 records of 2003.
I have given talks and exhibited software across Europe. I’m also involved in teaching giving regular talks and workshops at universities across the UK. I also had also a teaching post at DIEM (Danish Institute of Electronic Music) in Aarhus, Denmark during 2005 (that was a killer commute from London)
