Sonic Acts is an interdisciplinary arts organisation based in Amsterdam. 

Founded in 1994 to present new developments in electronic and digital art forms, Sonic Acts has gained prominence with its biennial international festival — an intensive art, theory and technology gathering motivated by changes in the ecological, political, technological and social landscape. Sonic Acts is also a leading platform for international projects, research and the commissioning and co-production of new artworks, often working together with local and international partner organisations such as independent and institutional cultural incubators, universities and kindred festivals.

In the course of its more than 25-year history, Sonic Acts has been a site for experimentation: a place to exchange, think, create, learn, and act. By presenting artistic investigations and research, Sonic Acts aims to advance experimentation and in turn provide a podium for dynamic perspectives that can be tools for discovery, growth, development, and emancipation – vital to understanding the complexities of our contemporary world.
 
With a focus on talent development, Sonic Acts supports a community of emerging artists through the residency and mentorship programmes [Overexposed](https://sonicacts.com/discover/overexposed) and [Underexposed](https://sonicacts.com/discover/underexposed), as well as through the commissioning and production of new artworks. The festival and year-round activities bring together artists, curators, critical thinkers and a curious, diverse audience. Next to its biennial festival, Sonic Acts organises [Practicum](https://sonicacts.com/discover/practicum), a series of workshops, reading and listening groups focused on applied knowledge and addressing ecological concerns; and [Night Air](https://sonicacts.com/discover/night-air), a programme about pollution combining in-depth talks with films, live performances, and a club night. Sonic Acts publishes the magazine _[Ecoes](https://sonicacts.com/discover/magazine-ecoes-issue-3)_ about art in the age of pollution, as well as books, music releases, and online publications in connection to its festival, commissioned works, and research projects.
 
Through this wide range of cross-disciplinary programmes, Sonic Acts explores the rapidly changing relationship between art, science, technology, and politics. The exhibitions, club nights, screenings, workshops, and symposia are grounds for radical audiovisual performances and installations, contemporary visual art, avant-garde film, progressive club music, and innovative new media, celebrating and fuelled by compelling artistic and critical perspectives.
 
Sonic Acts partners with a number of institutions across projects. As an ongoing member of both de [Zaak Nu](https://www.dezaaknu.nl/over-ons) and [MOKER](https://moker.amsterdam/), they join local forces to support the presentation and development of visual arts in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Other completed collaborative projects have included the four-year art, research and commissioning project [Re-Imagine Europe](https://re-imagine-europe.eu/), initiated by Sonic Acts and organised in collaboration with ten cultural organisations across Europe; the [Progress Bar](https://sonicacts.com/discover/progress-bar) series, highlighting the latest tendencies in radical sound and club culture alongside urgent conversations about politics and society at large; the [Sonic Acts Academy](https://2020.sonicacts.com/about), a biannual forum dedicated to artistic research; and [Murmansk Prospekt](https://murmanskprospekt.net/), a collaboration exploring the impact of human beings on the planet. Earlier projects include the international research and commissioning project [Dark Ecology](https://sonicacts-frontend.vercel.app/discover/dark-ecology), as well as the programming of three editions of the [Kontraste Festival](https://sonicacts-frontend.vercel.app/discover/kontraste) in Krems, Austria.

History

The Sonic Acts Archive collects documentation about works, events, and people, including audio-visual material, essays, interviews and publications that have been presented across Sonic Acts’ multi-faced programming.

Having evolved from a niche event for enthusiasts, blending academic music with cutting-edge electronic sounds, into a thematic festival and commissioning body that foregrounds the cross-pollination of art, music, science and technology, the institutional archive generated as a result focuses on the production of new media art. It documents the processes of creating new media works and practitioners’ engagement with “new technologies”, the networks of people (artists, curators, producers, and technicians that attend to it) and the material histories of tools and procedures used by artists (across visual, sound and film media) to present and create such works. Finally, it illuminates the crucial role of the festival as a site of creation of artistic work, equivalent in importance to the artist's studio, the darkroom or the writer’s desk – a goal that echoes the intentions behind the very founding of Sonic Acts Festival back in 1994.

The Sonic Acts Archive advocates for social memory, for sensorial experiences and ‘hard to discipline’ artworks and performances that require specific presentational formats and participatory audiences of a festival setting to exist.

See you at Paradiso for DRUK book fair on Tuesday 3 December

Taking place on Sunday, 3 December in [Paradiso](https://www.paradiso.nl/en), DRUK print fair opens at 12:00 with  over a hundred publishers and artists from the Netherlands and Belgium selling art books, literary pearls, poetry collections, indie publications, non-fiction, art prints, and other unique paper objects. The day’s activities also include a masterclass with a do-it-yourself publisher, a lecture and live DJ set from writer and stage poet DS Daluiso, as well as workshops. 

What unites these (mostly) specialist publishers is that they attach great importance to authenticity, creativity, and individuality. Sonic Acts is proud to join them and share some copies of our own publications and releases, such as [_Ecoes_](https://sonicacts.com/archive/ecoes) magazines, _The Dark Universe_ (2013) or _Hereafter_ (2019) –  an anniversary publication which marked 25 years of our organisation.

# In 2024, celebrate with us the 30th anniversary edition of the Sonic Acts Biennial!

Curated around topics and thematics that echo the ongoing environmental crisis and its interconnectedness and tensions with the body, the programme will take place from 2 February to 24 March in various locations around Amsterdam, such as Paradiso, Muziekgebouw, Bimhuis, Eye Filmmuseum, W139, Zone2Source, Oude Kerk, Looiersgracht 60, Stedelijk Museum, Garage Noord and kanaal40, amongst others. Marking 30 years of Sonic Acts, this anniversary edition of the Biennial takes place between 2 February and 24 March 2024, focusing on spectacular, multi-sensory cultural practices that respond to climate emergency, global geopolitics, and the intangible.

With more than 50 live events taking place in 15 locations across Amsterdam and hybridly, we are delighted to reveal a line-up that features pioneering international artists, musicians, filmmakers, thinkers, and other creatives who tune into different ways of sensing and inhabiting our collective environments.

For now, here is a preview of what to expect:

# Exhibition
Incorporating works by **Lukas Marxt**, **Annika Kappner**, **Pedro Matias**, and more, the exhibition embraces a multiplicity of ways of interacting with the thresholds of the body. Tactile sculptures, video works, and large-scale installations echo and give shape to the ongoing environmental crisis. The exhibition will take place across **W139** and **Looiersgracht 60**, two locations in the heart of Amsterdam. Expect a public programme of workshops, film screenings, conversations, and walks. 

# Symposium
A two-day conference in the **Stedelijk Museum** invites leading theorists, artists and researchers to delve into the theme of *The Spell of the Sensuous*. Enriching dialogues, lectures and performative presentations provide insight into experimental and innovative practices responding to the climate emergency. With **Astrida Neimanis**, **Elvia Wilk**, **Denise Ferreira da Silva**, **Margarida Mendes**, and many others, we will think relationally across disciplines, evoking ways of relating to the world around us that emphasise the senses and embodiment. 

# Spatial Sound Platform
**Zone2Source** in Amstelpark will serve as a living project space for Sonic Acts’ online [Spatial Sound Platform](https://sonicacts.com/spatial-sound-platform), where visitors will be able to experience multi-channel sound recordings and live concerts by artists like **Galen Tipton**, **Felicity Mangan**, and **Farzané**. At the crossroads of art, technology and innovation, the Spatial Sound Platform also aims to transcend borders and redefine sound transmission by providing online access to live multichannel performances presented during the Biennial.

# Michel Waisvisz Project
Artist and composer **Tarek Atoui**, in collaboration with **Kristina Andersen**, re-imagines the archives of Michel Waisvisz (1949–2008), the celebrated Dutch inventor of experimental electronic musical instruments. The project centres on commissioning new instruments, re-editions of Waisvisz’  inventions, which are then activated through workshops and performances at the **Bimhuis**. Sonic Acts is also proud to announce its collaboration with Muziekgebouw's **SoundLAB**, with showcases by **Boris Shershenkov**, and others to be announced. 

# Expanded Experience at Muziekgebouw
On the banks of the IJ, the **Muziekgebouw** will host exhilarating concerts and audiovisual screenings. The programme brings together diverse and sonically spectacular approaches to sound, from reviving ancient instruments, to a special commission for the expansive 31-notes-per-octave Fokker organ. Featuring **Kassel Jaeger** & **Eléonore Huisse** and **ï î** (Lukas De Clerck & Victor Guaita Igual) with **Sarah Davachi**, and more.

# Film Programme
The **Eye Filmmuseum**'s exceptional projection facilities host a series of visually and narratively exquisite features focusing on the sensual interplay between ecology, humans, and the nonhuman. Extending Sonic Acts’ long-term investigation into moving images, the 2024 cinematic programme incorporates unique filmic works. After screenings and live audiovisual performances, discussions will take place with artists and researchers, such as **Susan Schuppli**, following the world premiere of her newly co-commissioned film about ice trading.

# Club Nights
The 2024 Biennial continues after dark at renowned Amsterdam venues **Garage Noord**, **kanaal40**, and **OT301**. Featuring international DJ talents and dancefloor-oriented live acts, we welcome **Bapari**, **Low End Activist**, and **aircode** amongst many others, to help us shift gears into the early hours, promising future-facing raves and genre-blending electronica.

Sonic Acts Biennial 2024 First Artist Reveal

Sonic Acts is looking for a temporary freelance Transport Manager to join the team from 2 January to 10 March 2024 – ensuring that people and equipment make it safely from A to B during [Sonic Acts Biennial 2024](https://2024.sonicacts.com/) events.

## About the job
Sonic Acts is looking for someone to assist the production team with transportation during the Sonic Acts Biennial 2024.

Taking place at various locations between 2 February and 24 March 2024, the Sonic Acts Biennial is a large event that welcomes many international speakers and artists who will travel to Amsterdam and participate in events at multiple locations throughout the city. There will be extra focus needed on a more intensive music festival weekend taking place on the weekend of Feb 23 to 25, during which many artists will need to be transported between Paradiso, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw, and Garage Noord, for example.

We are looking for someone based Amsterdam and surroundings, who will join our team from the first week of January onwards, for two days per week working out of our office at Paradiso venue. The job will run from 2 January to 10 March, for a total of 29 working days.

## Tasks:

**Internal transport coordination**

- Recruiting drivers, drawing up the transport schedule, coordinating pick ups and drop offs during the Biennial, managing the transport budget;
- ordering and coordinating other cab rides including payments and invoices;
- organisation of public transport itineraries for crew and artists, including bike rentals;
- organising group transport for excursions;
- budget management and settlement of overall transport budget.

**Goods transport**

- Inventory and coordination of goods transportation during the Biennial, in consultation with technical and logistic producers and the communication department;
- organisation of artworks transportation.

Vacancy: Sonic Acts Biennial 2024 Transport Manager

Facilitated by writer and artist **Martina Raponi** (**noiserr**), _Feedback Loops_ is a critical writing and reflection workshop during Sonic Acts Biennial 2024.

Intended for MA, rMA or PhD degree students and graduates, as well as individuals interested in pursuing a career in criticism, journalism, research or cultural radio, the workshop focuses on developing interpretive and analytical skills in relation to performance, sonic practices, theory and transdisciplinary art. During the sessions, participants will reflexively consider dominant modes of critical analysis, querying what it means to embark on reparative, poetic and dialogic exchanges. 

In the book _Research Is Ceremony_, scholar Shawn Wilson writes that: 'Emotionless, passionless, abstract, intellectual research is a goddamn lie; it does not exist.’ In harmony with this perspective, Feedback Loops aims to question so-called ‘objective’ critical discourse, which often maintains distance. Instead, the workshop delves into methods that center sensations and affect. It explores what it means to intimately engage with artistic spaces and practices that focus on collective listening, the body and the senses.

Utilising a methodology of diagramming, fragmentary collage and dialogue, attendees will unearth the core themes of the Sonic Acts Biennial 2024, touching upon artworks, standout performances, lasting impressions and complex or uncertain resonances. Feedback Loops culminates with a broadcast on **Radio WORM**. Guided by prompts, attendees will present their research, assembled texts, sounds and reflections gathered during the Biennial, taking part in a roundtable, podcast-style discussion. To prepare, guest host **Cara Meyer** – otherwise known as Cardboard Lamb – an experienced radio-maker/programmer, DJ and writer, will lead a session on crafting engaging broadcast media. 

Feedback Loops builds on the ten year legacy of the critical writing workshop, which has been offered for the past decade as part of the Sonic Acts programme. This iteration sees a slightly new orientation and form as we address the evolving landscape of interventions and discourse mediums.

## Participation

Feedback Loops is designed for students, early career artistic and academic researchers, alongside writers and other creatives who utilise writing in their practice. An interest in cultural radio is preferable, but experience in broadcast media is not needed. Participants should feel an affinity for transdisciplinary art as well as openness to engage in critical collective discussions, creating spaces of inclusive negotiation through collaboration and active exchange.  

The workshop costs €50. Participants are then granted free access to Biennial events, including exhibitions, the festival weekend, and more.

## Accessibility

The workshop will be conducted in English, and sign language assistance will not be provided. A meal will be provided on the recording day, but please note that travel costs to Rotterdam are not covered. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. For Amsterdam residents, a meeting place will be shared in advance for those interested in traveling to WORM together by train.

From 13 to 17 November, **open-weather** (**Sophie Dyer** and **Sasha Engelmann**) will give the workshop _Stars in Their Eyes_ to students from the ArtScience Interfaculty of [KABK](https://www.kabk.nl/) in The Hague. As part of **Cocky Eek**'s course _Dark Skies – Field Station Friesland_, they will learn how to build a DIY ground satellite during a stay in Marrum. The group will also be joined by artist, writer, and scientist **Adriana Knouf**. 

Sonic Acts is happy to announce this collaboration with the ArtScience Interfaculty, embedded within the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in The Hague, from guest teacher **Cocky Eek**, who organised a special autumn course for her students at [Het Lage Noorden](https://www.hetlagenoorden.nl/), an artist-in-residence space in Marrum.

Her course, _Dark Skies – Field Station Friesland_, focuses on field research as a crucial part of our cultural orientation in a world of change and uncertainty. It aims to engage this interaction, applying field research from this course directly to the dark skies of the Wadden area to observe its impact on the rhythms of the living world down under. Amongst various contributors, open-weather is a feminist experiment in imaging and imagining the Earth and its weather systems using DIY community tools.

Since 2020, **open-weather** has held ten DIY satellite ground station workshops in the UK, Austria, Germany, Greece, Poland, the Netherlands, and online. Our night sky is increasingly populated by a constellation of earth’s observation satellites known as ‘unblinking eyes’. Some such satellites are called the National Ocean Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather satellites, part of a family of satellites that have been orbiting Earth since 1970.

By tuning into these satellites’ increasingly glitchy transmissions, we are witnessing their slow deaths, the end of almost half a century wherein they witnessed the climate crisis on our behalf. Can we return their gaze? By building a DIY satellite ground station in the darkness of Het Lage Noorden, can we watch a sunlit satellite pass overhead while receiving, in real-time, its image of us? What would this shot-reverse-shot yield? As we catch each other’s eyes, what last words would we exchange, if we could?

Stars in Their Eyes with open-weather

From [2 February to 24 March](https://2024.sonicacts.com), Sonic Acts will host an extensive avant-garde art festival with exhibitions, sound performances, club nights, symposiums, film screenings, workshops, and more.

We are looking for volunteers to support our team in the realisation of all the Biennial programmes. The opportunities will cover a range of roles, from assisting producers, artist hosting, and door management, to catering and hospitality, both in the lead-up to and during events. This is a unique chance to get to know an organisation that has now been operating for over thirty years in the Dutch cultural scene and beyond.

Joining the team gives you access to Biennial events, exciting venues, new experiences across a range of roles, and connects you to a diverse community dedicated to fostering new thinking in art. Volunteers also receive a Sonic Acts goodie bag and catered meals during shifts.

Part of the [Spatial Sound Platform](https://sonicacts.com/spatial-sound-platform) during Sonic Acts Biennial in February and March, **Ji Youn Kang** is set to facilitate an extensive and engaging workshop at **Zone2Source**.

## About the Workshop

When we engage with sound, we are confronted with its interconnected relationship to space. The occurrence of phenomena like reverberation, refraction, and reflection not only communicate characteristics about the sound itself but also offer insights into the surrounding environment. This shared synergy is fundamental to our daily existence and interactions. The Spatial Sound Workshop will delve into this experience with novel perspectives by examining the role of these phenomena in shaping sound propagation. Could a diverse array of technologies assist us in unraveling the intricate connections between sound, space, and our sensory experience?

In this site-specific workshop, participants will embark on an exploration of two distinct spaces in profound detail, harnessing their potential as unconventional musical instruments. The scope of exploration extends beyond the boundaries of physical spaces, delving into the possibilities of harnessing online realms. In both physical and virtual spaces, we will use various tools such as microphones, loudspeakers, and some basic programming to discover the voices of these spaces and let them ‘sing together’. The culmination of the workshop will be the creation of a sound piece that encapsulates the essence of the collective experiments and insights gained throughout the workshop journey.

## Ji Youn Kang

Ji Youn Kang is a South Korean composer, performer and sound artist based in The Hague. She achieved her master’s degrees in Sonology from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and in Composition from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. 

Most of her pieces have been composed for both traditional and non-traditional instruments ranging from works for solo instruments to large orchestral pieces. 
One of her main interests lies in researching the relationship between musical and physical spaces that she has been exploring with a variety of multichannel systems such as the Acousmonium and wave field synthesis systems. 

She is also active as a solo performer seeking for ways to combine three different sound areas on stage; acoustic instruments, analog and digital sound with DIY analog synthesizers and live processing on a laptop. 

Her pieces have been commissioned by and performed in many venues and festivals, including La Biennale di Venezia, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Time of Music, Sonic Acts, International Film Festival Rotterdam, SICMF, MPyC and Synthèse. Currently, she is teaching at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague and is a researcher in the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

# Practical Information

The workshop takes place over the duration of 2 months, starting Sunday 4 February and culminating in a public presentation on Sunday 17 March. The workshop takes place online and in the exhibition space Zone2Source, which will be transformed during the biennial into the Spatial Sound Platform project space. Presence to all sessions live and online is strongly recommended.

# Participation

The workshop is open for up to 10 participants. The course is oriented towards artists, musicians, researchers, prior knowledge of spatial sound production is not necessary. 
Prior experience in sound recording, field recording, editing, live performing or installation art is recommended.

There is a participation fee of €125, and a discounted fee for students of €80. 

If the participation fee poses a barrier to access, please indicate this when responding to the question on financial accessibility in your application.

Transportation and accommodation is not included in the workshop fee, to be organised by participants personally.

# Accessibility

The workshop will take place in English without sign language assistance. The site of the workshop, Zone2Source is wheelchair accessible with accessible toilets. The workshop may involve loud or prolonged sound which may not be suitable for those who experience sound sensitivity.

Spatial Sound Workshop with Ji Youn Kang

This October at the [Willem Twee Studios](https://www.willem-twee.nl/) in 's-Hertogenbosch, a workspace for electro-acoustic music, three members of the [Ràdio Web MACBA](https://rwm.macba.cat/en) Working Group – **Jiménez de Cisneros**, **Tiago Pina** and **Albert Tarrats** – undertake a new residency co-produced with Sonic Acts. 

The historic studios house an array of 70s and 80s synthesisers; impressive vintage equipment that the trio will engage with to produce an innovative, fresh take on library music. These compositions will then be utilised for future podcasts on Ràdio Web MACBA. Centred around the notion of dialogue, the project sets out to challenge standard music-making methodologies in favour of a more speculative approach.

The RWM Working Group is made up of a team of individuals who participate, produce and collaborate on different projects at the radio. Since 2016, this collective has held monthly meetings to slow down their creative processes and share methodologies, interests and ideas in person. Together they have developed sound libraries, held public workshops and participated in artist residencies.

Following the example of previous experiences – first as individual residencies at INA GRM (France) in 2020-21 and later on as a collective 6-month residency at Phonos (Spain) in 2022 – three members of the Ràdio Web MACBA Working Group have been invited to a new residency project, this time an intensive week-long collective event taking place at the Willem Twee Studios’ state-of-the-art facilities in Den Bosch (The Netherlands).

Although Tiago Pina, Albert Tarrats and Roc Jiménez de Cisneros have, as individuals, followed a consistent trajectory in music making, instrument building and sound experimentation, this residency serves as an invitation for them to work together, in dialogue with each other and with the vintage synthesisers available at the facilities. This project will be an open conversation, with plans for team members from the Willem Twee Studios to play a role beyond that of mere facilitators. In summary, the residency offers a space for interaction, generosity and exchange.

Ràdio Web MACBA Working Group Residency at Willem Twee Studios

Returning for a celebratory 30th anniversary edition, [Sonic Acts Biennial 2024](http://2024.sonicacts.com/) takes place from 2 February to 24 March, with an immersive and intensive ‘festival’ weekend running from 23 to 25 February.

Unfolding across various temporal modalities and timescales – from month-long exhibitions to hour-long walks – the programme embraces a multiplicity of ways of sensing, engaging with the thresholds of the body and tuning into otherness.

Over two months, the Biennial takes shape as an exhibition, a multichannel sound programme, club nights, large theatrical productions, a symposium, film programmes, sound and video installations, sound and field walks, workshops and more. Curated around topics and thematics that echo the ongoing environmental crisis and its interconnectedness and tensions with the body, events are staged across Amsterdam at various venues, including **Paradiso**, **Muziekgebouw**, **Eye Filmmuseum**, **W139**, **Zone2Source**, **Oude Kerk**, **Looiersgracht 60**, **Stedelijk Museum**, **Garage Noord** and **kanaal40**, with many more locations to be unveiled.

# The Spell of the Sensuous

The escalating climate emergency and the role and importance of art within this context has been an ongoing interest and concern for Sonic Acts over the past decade. Together we have asked how art can respond to, and intervene in, the artificially constructed divisions between nature and culture that have fuelled our extractive economies. Staying within this ecological framework and embracing the urgency of rethinking relations across species, Sonic Acts Biennial 2024: *The Spell of the Sensuous* turns for inspiration to, and takes its name from, **David Abram**’s eponymous book, published around the same time as Sonic Acts was founded. Under its spell, we will explore the web of relations – experienced and perceived through the ‘sensuous body’ – that evoke our rootedness in the larger ecology of earth beings.

​​Known today as the author of the ubiquitous term ‘more-than-human’, Abram was one of the first academic ecological thinkers to acknowledge animism as a worldview, drawing attention to cosmologies and traditions that always already regarded the natural world as imbued with consciousness. For Abram, animism is a form of ‘direct perceptual experience, not mediated by technologies’, that brings us in touch with the wider community of the more-than-human world. He contemplated ways of relating – rooted in various Indigenous practices and ancestral knowledge – that emphasised the entanglement of all things on the planet.
 
Yet how do we tune into that which we cannot grasp with language or vision, forms of cognition which are often positioned as the primary ways of knowing in our societies? Embracing the fluidity of the boundaries between human and more-than-human, the Biennial will expand beyond simply datafying the climate crisis and instead search for the vibrations, intimacies, resonances, and leakages emanating from our own bodies to the bodies of the Earth. In the process, it will not abandon solid ground but, following Abram, we will try to rethink ‘rationality’ and learn how to feel the world and open up the potentialities of senses that can help unlock the not easily accessible connections with our surroundings. 
 
The visual identity that has been developed for *The Spell of the Sensuous* pays homage to **Georgia O’Keeffe**, an artist renowned for her mythic and uninhabited landscape masterpieces. Channelling her distinctive palette, the AI generated visuals employ earthly and lively hues hinting at images beyond human senses – a mystical entrancement in O’Keeffe’s landscapes or the liquid interconnectedness of (non)beings.
 
In her own words, remarking on the sensuously intimate and familial act of noticing nature, ‘in a way – nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small – we haven’t time – and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.’

Announcing Sonic Acts Biennial 2024: The Spell of the Sensuous

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures – the largest museum in the United States devoted to the art and artists of movie-making – presents the exhibition and screenings [_Vertical Cinema: Shifting Perspectives_](https://www.academymuseum.org/en/exhibitions/shifting-perspectives-vertical-cinema) from 12 November 2023 to 4 August 2024.


Inspired by Sonic Acts [Vertical Cinema](http://verticalcinema.org) screening concept, which premiered in 2013, a selection of archival and contemporary material, all flipped lengthways, explore the radical possibilities of turning convention on its side. The exhibition is located in the museum’s double-height Hurd Gallery, offering a viewing experience featuring a 20’ high x 3’ wide screen. Amongst the works shown are two films commissioned by Sonic Acts – [**Joost Rekveld**’s _#43_](https://sonicacts.com/archive/joost-rekveld-43) (2013) and [**HC Gilje**’s _rift_](https://sonicacts.com/archive/hc-gilje-rift) (2017). 

The images in the film _#43_ are, in some respects, comparable to organic cells. Miniscule differences between pixels become seeds for processes of decay and growth – an imbalance that embodies a store of energy for the system as a whole, similar to electrical potential. _#43_ is inspired by ideas from biology and mathematics that first came to prominence during the development of cybernetics in the 1950s and 1960s, and that have since evolved into more recent manifestations such as catastrophe theory, complexity theory and artificial life. Meanwhile, _rift_ magnifies the violent transformation of crude oil into colourful plastic wrappers for consumer goods, resulting in flickering microscopic textures. As a marker of the Capitalocene, plastic’s lifespan is far longer than the items it wraps, the people who buy it or the companies that made it. Soundtracked by **Justin Bennett**, _rift_ is also a homage to the New Zealand artist and motion enthusiast **Len Lye**.  

Running from 12 November 2023 to 4 August 2024, _Shifting Perspectives: Vertical Cinema_ is comprised of 25 short works. In addition to debuting titles by three Southern Californian filmmakers –  _a desert dreams in red_ by **Zaina Bseiso**, _Dusty Tapes_ by **Fox Maxy** and _black man fly_ by **Walter Thompson-Hernández** – the exhibition further explores the roots of the vertical screen. Historical chronophotographic material on loan from La Cinémathèque française will be presented alongside pieces created by students of the Ghetto Film School, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to develop the next generation of great storytellers. Central to _Shifting Perspectives_ is the question: What is considered cinematic? Weaving multilayered narratives, traversing horizontal landscapes through a portrait-shaped canvas, the exhibition functions as a  provocation to expand the image onto a new axis, reflecting the proliferation of vertical formats on portable smart devices.

Founded in 2009, Miss Read is dedicated to building a community and creating a meeting place for discourse on artists’ books, thematic publications and publishing as artistic and political practice. The festival is committed to broadening the spectrum of what publishing represents and aims to nurture different cultures and communities from around the world.

Extending their exploration into Decolonizing Art Book Fairs, Miss Read 2023 has a special focus on practices from the East(s). On Saturday, September 23, the annual Conceptual Poetics Day (conceptualpoetics.org) explores the imaginary border between visual art and literature, presenting a series of interventions, talks, discussions and readings orientated around this theme.

Minji Kim 

Drawing from notes and recordings made during the Sonic Acts residency programme OVEREXPOSED x Lives of Deltas, sound artist Minji Kim discusses her ongoing research into the sonic qualities of the Zandmotor 'sand engine' experiment in the Netherlands.

Minji Kim, also known as [Unknown Kim](https://unknownkim.com/), is a researcher and sound artist based in The Hague and Seoul. She is a founder of the eco-acoustic sound artist initiative [Acoustic Territories](https://acousticterritories.com/). Her practice investigates the relationship between human-designed infrastructure and coastal spaces, asking how sound and music might contribute to a better ecological environment. 

Asking how ecological approaches to pollution can re-frame interspecies networks in the contemporary urban delta, Minji Kim's project for OVEREXPOSED x Lives of Deltas residency programme takes inspiration from the [Zand Motor](https://dezandmotor.nl/), an experimental anti-erosion pump-dredging system built on the southern coast of The Netherlands. Following her participation in the programme, Kim developed a site-specific instrument in response to the system's mechanisms, creating a medium that can reveal the acoustic quality of these coastal infrastructures in real-time.

[OVEREXPOSED](https://sonicacts.com/archive/overexposed) is a residency programme from Sonic Acts investigating pollution and its effects on everything living and nonliving, through which we aim to create awareness about pollution both in local surroundings and on a planetary scale. The outcomes of this research are presented in a variety of formats, including text publications, visual journals, and performative or discursive presentations. In 2023, the residency was paired with '[The Lives of Deltas](https://urbaninterfaces.sites.uu.nl/the-lives-of-deltas-a-research-exchange-on-sustainability-and-the-imaginary-the-university-of-hong-kong-utrecht-university/)’ – a research exchange at Utrecht University.

Following February’s soft launch event _**Soundsweird: Non-formal Music Learning for Young People**_ at Tempel Amsterdam, we are delighted to announce that the educational platform [**soundsweird.org**](https://soundsweird.org/) is complete! Soundsweird.org is an educational platform for non-formal music learning and experimental approaches to sound for youth in the ages 13 to 20. It contains six free workshop modules, each promoting listening, mutual sound research and co-creation.

These workshops, developed and translated into downloadable manuals by artists and musicians **Polina Medvedeva**, **Andreas Kühne**, **Yara Said** and **Zgjim Elshani** among others are free to access, share and use. We warmly encourage youth workers, music professionals and educators to join us in exploring the platform.

### _When I Sound I Am Speaking_ by Polina Medvedeva & Andreas Kühne

Exploring field recording in an urban environment, _When I Sound I Am Speaking_ offers a first introduction to recording and composing soundscapes for young people. Built during Sonic Acts workshops in Amsterdam, this module provides a general understanding of techniques fundamental to field recording, and outlines diverse uses of different microphones and capturing methods.

### _Collectiveness: Creating Sounds Together_ by KONTEJNER

Designed by artists at Zagreb's bureau of contemporary art KONTEJNER, the module _Collectiveness: Creating Sounds Together_ focuses on experimental music creation and aims to introduce teenagers to a diverse range of musical expressions in parallel to developing skills in acoustic and electronic instruments. Crafted to cultivate creative freedom among its participants, this module strives to develop alternative approaches to music making.

### _Music in the Digital Space: How to Livecode_ by Fero Király, Jakub Krejčí, Ján Šicko and Jonas (JONÁŠ) Gruska

In this two part series developed at contemporary cultural space A4 in Bratislava, Music in the Digital Space introduces the basics of innovative tools and live coding to create complex rhythmic and melodic structures through user-friendly programming languages. In this module, participants discover the algorithmic nature of music, and learn to code their own music live, as well as perform it together with others.

### _Spatial Sound_ by Davor Sanvincenti and Hrvoje Nikšić

Built during a month-long series of workshops at KONTEJNER in Zagreb, the module Spatial Sound is intended for youth aged between 16 and 20 who are interested in experimental sound, audio recording, and electronic composition. Through a cycle of sessions, this module deals with the physicality and spatial qualities of sound, as well as the creation of spatial sound artworks.

Soundsweird is the result of the two-year collaborative educational project, _Sound Experiments – New Approaches to Non-Formal Music Learning_, by three European organisations active in the fields of experimental music and sound art, as well as youth education.

Made in collaboration between Sonic Acts in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), [KONTEJNER](http://www.kontejner.org/en/o-nama/kontejner) in Zagreb (Croatia), and [A4](https://a4.sk/en/) in Bratislava (Slovakia), the project is supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.

Free education platform Soundweird releases new workshop manuals 

Freshly unveiled to their subscribers, _Ecoes_ #5 was Stack Magazines' issue of the month in June! A subscription service based in London, Stack helps people to discover the best independent publishing by delivering a surprise independently-published magazine to thousands of readers around the world each month.

In an interview by director **Steven Watson** for the platform's Magazine Club blog, editor-in-chief **Mirna Belina** and assistant editor **Hannah Pezzack** discuss the process behind compiling Ecoes; from essayistic texts to interviews, experimental writing, and design choices. They dive into the material socio-political specificities of melting ice, floods, and contaminative poetry, querying how to move beyond the human in response to the environmental crisis.
